The Cardinal Sin of Recovery...

Is believing that we will NEVER drink or use drugs again. When this happens we are not living in the truth of our disease, and the cunning voice of our addiction is using our own success at sobriety against us. If we're new to sobriety we might be living in what's known as the "pink cloud" of recovery, and the pain associated with our abusive pattern of drinking or using is still fresh in our mind. Eventually these painful memories will vanish, and our addictive mind will convince us that a little use won't harm us. When we start believing this lie, however, we will always run into the truth of our addiction and find ourselves abusing our chemical of choice again before we know it.
Recovery is more than just staying sober, and relapsing is more than just picking up a drink or using a drug. Long term maintenance of our sobriety requires a vigilant effort to change. AA and the 12 steps are a program of action, and these actions will eventually will lead to a change in thoughts, behaviors, and chartacter. As the old saying goes, "The point at which you don't think you need to go to a meeting is when you need a meeting the most. "
