Keeping our higher power out of our lives and continuing to run our own program relying on self-will (ego) prevents alcoholics and addicts from surrendering to our disease. Addiction is a disease of denial, and we have spent the better part of our lives denying we have a problem and therefore seeking help.
We have spent our lives trying to fill a God-size hole in ourselves with everything but God (drugs, alcohol, shopping, food, etc). When we finally get honest with ourselves and become willing to seek help, we begin the process of letting someone other that ourselves (ego) run our unmanageable lives.
We may or may not believe in a THE supreme being that is preached by the monotheistic religions of the world, but we do need to seek a higher power because we have proven time and time again that we can not manage our addictions and our lives by ourselves.
Even when we have been sober for a period of time, if we do not have a higher power in our lives we will only be experiencing a partial recovery, and the spiral of relapse will not be far off. A strong ego is often associated with a prideful person that lacks humility, and as the old saying goes "Pride comes before the fall."
